Volunteering with HepatitisWA

HepatitisWA operates telephone information and support service line led by volunteer staff, providing information on viral hepatitis to the community and phone support services to people affected by hepatitis.

Do you have a passion for Harm Minimisation, Community Health, Hepatitis and other BBVs, Social Justice, Inclusivity and Diversity?

HepatitisWA has an opportunity for you to develop your skills while supporting others in the community. You'll gain experience with community engagement, public speaking, interpersonal skills, health promotion and harm reduction services.

HepatitisWA seeks volunteers (age 18+) for our Needle & Syringe Program, Help Line and Community Events.

Help us prevent and treat hep B, and eliminate hep C by 2030.

Volunteer staff can participate in our Needle & Syringe Program (NSP) which provides information, equipment and referral to people who inject drugs. Additionally, volunteer staff can participate in health promotion and community education events such as University Orientation Days, Health Promotion Expos at schools as well as information stalls at community events.

For further inquiry into our Volunteer or Student Placement Program, please contact our Volunteers Coordinator, Pete Townsend vo@hepatitiswa.com.au

Volunteers’ shifts are either morning 9am - 1pm or afternoon 1pm - 5pm weekdays, with occasional community events out of business hours.

Volunteers are encouraged to commit to a minimum of one shift per fortnight.

Hear from our volunteers

I sought out a volunteer opportunity at HepatitisWA with an interest in harm-reduction and addiction. HepatitisWA instil a non-judgemental and non-discriminatory approach when dealing with clients, teaching invaluable professional and personal skills to their volunteers.

As an aspiring medical professional, these are the skills we don’t learn from a lecture, yet they are the ones that will ensure we treat all of our patients with the dignity, respect, and advocacy that they deserve.

Pete and the rest of the team at HepWA have created a personable and safe environment for their staff, clients, and volunteers creating amazing opportunities.  Every shift is different, but I can genuinely say I leave each and every shift fulfilled.  Simply put, my time at HepWA has been invaluable.

Outside of HepWA I am a medical student and work in research. I am incredibly passionate when it comes to ensuring members of the community are all able to access judgement-free harm reduction measures and medical care.

Volunteering at HepWA enables me to improve my understanding of the needs of vulnerable people, make friends with other passionate volunteers and staff members, and contribute to a social issue that I really care about.
