Hepatitis C: Prevention of Transmission

Hepatitis C is transmitted through blood-to-blood contact.  Currently in Australia the most common way that hepatitis C is transmitted is through the sharing of drug injecting equipment.  It is estimated that up to ninety percent of hepatitis C infections are acquired this way.   Hepatitis C can transmission can be minimised by taking some simple precautions, including:
  1. reducing opportunities of coming in contact with infected blood;
  2. not sharing any injecting equipment;
  3. not sharing any personal toiletry items such as razors, toothbrushes, nail clippers or other items able to puncture the skin;
  4. keeping a first aid kit including latex gloves at home and in the car;
  5. cleaning and covering any abrasions, cuts or wounds with a waterproof dressing;
  6. cleaning up blood spills as soon as possible using paper towels and soapy water or full strength bleach;
  7. placing all bloodstained items (eg. used dressings, tampons or sanitary pads), into a plastic bag and placing them in a rubbish bin.

Further information on transmission and prevention may be found under Hepatitis C in the About Hepatitis section of this website or contact the Hepatitis Council of WA.
